VA announced on September 16, 2026, that eligible Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) coverage will have no premiums for November 2026 through January 2027. The announcement requires a current policy that has not lapsed or been cancelled for nonpayment; VA’s linked holiday FAQ specifies active coverage on November 1. Eligible coverage gets the exemption automatically, and VA says a letter or email will follow. A newly effective or reinstated policy still needs its first premium, so it may receive fewer than three covered months. If you prepaid for holiday months, VA says the covered amount is credited to your policy or you may request a refund. VA’s roughly $330 average saving is an estimate, not your guaranteed amount. Auto Pay and VA or retired-pay deductions have published holiday rules; external bank bill pay needs separate action. Do not cancel OSGLI Auto Pay or reverse a deduction because of the announcement. Check your official VGLI account or contact OSGLI for your own bill.
Does the announcement cover your situation?
The VA release gives the broad rule. The holiday-specific FAQ, linked from VA’s VGLI page, explains the effective-date and payment exceptions. Read both before acting on a bill.
| Situation | What VA establishes | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| VGLI coverage active November 1 | The FAQ says the holiday applies automatically if coverage is active on November 1; a lapse or cancellation on or before October 31 excludes it. | Check your VGLI account and any eligibility notice. A prior unpaid balance still matters. |
| New or reinstated coverage | The first premium activates coverage and is not part of the holiday. An effective date in November gets December and January; one in December gets January; January 1 or later gets none under VA's examples. | Verify the effective date and first payment with OSGLI. Do not assume all three months apply. |
| Prepaid for covered months | VA says covered premiums are credited; a refund may be requested instead. | Review the next billing statement and use the official OSGLI route if you want a refund. |
| Past-due, lapsed, or cancelled policy | The holiday does not erase a preholiday balance or restore coverage. A policy lapsed or cancelled by October 31 is excluded. | Verify your account status and any amount owed directly with OSGLI. |
| Another insurance program | The announcement names VGLI. The holiday FAQ explicitly excludes SGLI, FSGLI, TSGLI, VALife, and S-DVI; VMLI is a separate program and is not named. | Identify the program shown on your own policy or pay statement. |
Which premiums are covered?
The covered period is November 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027: November, December, and January. VA says eligible VGLI coverage continues under existing policy terms during that period. It is a temporary exemption for covered months, not a permanent rate cut or a cash grant.
The release says more than 457,000 Veterans participate in VGLI. VA reports an average monthly premium of about $110, an average three-month saving of about $330, and nearly $150 million in expected nationwide premium payments avoided. Those are VA’s estimates. The actual premium depends on age and coverage amount, and a policy with a newly effective date may receive only one or two holiday months. The $150 million figure is not a pool of cash checks to policyholders.
VA’s release calls this its first VGLI premium holiday. That is VA’s description of its program history. The separate July 2025 VGLI discount FAQ described a premium-rate reduction effective July 1, 2025. Its payment instructions addressed that older discount and should not be treated as instructions for this holiday.
What does “automatic” mean for your policy?
The exemption is automatic for eligible coverage. VA says eligible policyholders will be notified by letter or email in the coming weeks. The FAQ adds the active-on-November-1 test. It also says a new or reinstated policy’s first premium is always required to activate coverage and pay for the initial month. Coverage effective before November 1 gets all three covered months; coverage effective in November gets December and January after the required November payment; coverage effective in December gets January after the required December payment; coverage effective January 1 or later gets no holiday benefit under the FAQ’s examples. The same effective-date rule applies when an SGLI Disability Extension is ending and VGLI begins.
If a policy has an unpaid balance from before November, the holiday does not cancel that debt. VA urges policyholders to pay a past-due balance through the official account or OSGLI to keep coverage active. The ordinary VGLI payment FAQ says coverage is cancelled if the full amount due is not paid within 60 days of its due date; the holiday FAQ governs which premiums are exempt. If a policy’s current, late, grace-period, or reinstatement status is unclear, get an account-specific answer from OSGLI instead of relying on a general description here.
What happens with your payment method or bill?
“No premium for the covered months” does not mean every bill arriving between November and January will show zero. VA says bills may still include past-due amounts or premiums for months outside the holiday. A monthly customer may receive a January bill for February. Quarterly, semiannual, or annual credits may be spread across two statements.
| Method | Holiday-specific VA instruction | Practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| OSGLI Auto Pay | No action is required. VA says Auto Pay will collect only premiums for months outside the holiday. | Do not cancel Auto Pay solely because of the announcement. Check an account-specific notice if a charge looks wrong. |
| External bank bill pay | VA says to contact your bank to stop recurring payments effective November 1, 2026, and restart them effective February 1, 2027. | This is the bank's separate bill-pay service, not OSGLI Auto Pay. Check for any earlier balance or outside-month amount before changing a scheduled payment. |
| VA disability compensation or military retired-pay deduction | VA says no action is needed: deductions pause during the holiday and resume afterward. | Review the pay statement; do not reverse a deduction based on a headline. Ask OSGLI to identify an unexpected amount. |
| Monthly direct bill | No charge for holiday coverage months; a January bill can be for February. | Read the coverage period and any past-due line, rather than the bill's arrival month alone. |
| Quarterly, semiannual, or annual bill | Covered prepayments are credited on the next statement; outside months can remain payable, and credit may span two bills. | The checked FAQ gives no single universal bill total or due date. |
| Credit card or electronic check | The ordinary VGLI FAQ lists these payment options. The holiday FAQ says a payment for covered months becomes a future credit, or you may ask for a refund. | It does not publish a separate automatic-card or electronic-check scheduling rule. |
The ordinary Auto Pay page explains due-date withdrawals and advance email notices. The holiday FAQ, rather than that ordinary page or the 2025 discount FAQ, supplies the holiday rule. Keep OSGLI Auto Pay and an external bank’s bill-pay service separate when deciding whether an instruction applies to you.
If you already paid for November, December, or January
VA’s release offers a three-month policy credit or a requested refund for advance payment through the holiday. The FAQ adds that covered amounts prepaid on quarterly, semiannual, or annual billing will automatically appear as a credit on the next billing statement. If the credit is absent from the latest statement, VA says it should appear on the next one. A payment accidentally sent for covered months is likewise credited to future bills unless you request a refund.
To request a refund, the holiday FAQ gives OSGLI at [email protected] or 800-419-1473, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. It gives no public deadline, processing interval, or payment method for the refund in the checked text. A credit is automatic under the FAQ; cash delivery is not. Ask OSGLI how your own policy’s covered amount is being handled. This site does not process refunds or collect policy details.
If a premium still appears or is deducted
First identify the policy and the coverage period, not just the date a bill or withdrawal appears. A January bill may be for February, and a bill during the holiday may include a pre-November balance. Then check your status, billing statement, and notice through VA’s VGLI page and its Prudential account link. Retain the notice, bill, relevant bank or pay statement, and any written OSGLI response so you can describe the exact charge.
If the charge appears to be for an exempt VGLI month, contact OSGLI through the VA contact page or the refund route above. Do not send a policy number, bank credentials, beneficiary data, identity documents, or a transaction screenshot to WVCOFCSRA. Do not reverse a payment before OSGLI explains any coverage consequence. The public FAQ does not give a separate charge-dispute form or guarantee a refund outcome for every account scenario.
VGLI is not the same as other insurance programs
VA’s holiday FAQ explicitly says the holiday applies only to VGLI. The similar names can be confusing, especially after separation from service or when a family has more than one policy.
| Program | Who or what it covers | Usual management route | September 16 holiday |
|---|---|---|---|
| VGLI | Term life coverage after military service for eligible former SGLI insureds. | OSGLI/Prudential VGLI account and contact center. | Named program, subject to active-coverage and first-premium rules. |
| SGLI | Term life coverage for eligible service members. | Service branch and milConnect/SOES; ordinary premium generally comes from base pay. | Not covered by this VGLI holiday. |
| FSGLI | Spouse and dependent-child coverage tied to a service member's SGLI. | Service member's SOES/milConnect route; spousal premium generally comes from service pay. | Not covered by this VGLI holiday. |
| VALife | Separate whole-life insurance for eligible Veterans with service-connected disabilities. | VA Life Insurance Center and its own policy account. | Not covered by this VGLI holiday. |
| VMLI | SAH-related mortgage protection paid to the mortgage lender. | VA Insurance Center and SAH-related process. | Not named in the VGLI announcement. |
| S-DVI | Separate legacy insurance for eligible service-disabled Veterans; closed to new applications. | VA Life Insurance Center. | Not covered by this VGLI holiday. |
Life-insurance proceeds are also different from VA DIC or Survivors Pension and from a VA burial allowance. This holiday changes none of those separate benefit rules.
Verify a holiday notice without exposing your policy
VA says eligible policyholders will receive a letter or email, but the checked public sources do not give a sample notice or a verified sender address. A message mentioning the holiday is therefore not proof that its link or refund request is genuine. Start from the official VA VGLI page and follow its account link, or use VA’s OSGLI contact listing. Avoid a sponsored search result or an unsolicited “refund” link as the route to sign in. Our guide to checking a VA-looking message or website provides a separate verification checklist.
What remains publicly unspecified?
As verified September 17, 2026, 01:28 UTC (September 16, 2026, 21:28 ET), the linked holiday FAQ does not give a refund-request deadline, a refund processing time, or a refund delivery method. It does not publish a sample eligibility notice, a universal first postholiday bill due date, or an account screen showing exactly how every credit will appear. It does describe credits on the next statement and says a missing credit should appear on the following statement. Account-specific grace or delinquency status still requires an OSGLI determination. These bounded gaps do not mean VA lacks an internal process; they mean the checked public pages do not establish a stronger promise.

VA gives automatic rules for OSGLI Auto Pay and pay deductions, separate bank-bill-pay instructions, and a credit or requested-refund path for covered prepayments. Check your own VGLI account or OSGLI before changing a payment arrangement or disputing a charge.
