WVO Founder honored for her service in military, community

Some of Watha Alston-Hooper’s best and worst memories came from her military experience.
“It was one of the hardest parts of my life, but it was the best experience of my life,” the 63-year-old Augusta resident said Tuesday. “It taught me how to deal with discipline and challenges. It made me the woman that I am today.”

Alston-Hooper served with the last class of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), a former branch of the Army for females, before it disbanded in 1978 and members were integrated into the regular Army. It was during this time her passion to serve and help others grew. But it was not easy , she said.
